Royal Copenhagen back
Start this tour by saying hello to the Little Mermaid! A courtyard visit is made at Amalienborg Palace, the winter residence of our Queen Margrethe II. Pass the colorful old sailors' quarter of Nyhavn, as well as the Royal Theatre. On the castle island you will find Christiansborg Palace (inside visit), and it was at this spot that Bishop Absalon founded Copenhagen in 1167. The original castle is no more, but throughout the centuries there have been several palaces and castles here, and this was once the home of the Royal family. Today's palace is from the late 1920's and houses the Danish Parliament, the Supreme Court as well as the Queen's Reception rooms, and you will pay a visit to the latter. (The reception rooms are closed on Mondays). Your last stop is the beautiful small Renaissance Castle of Rosenborg (inside visit), built in the early 17th century by King Christian IV. The castle is today a museum, and houses among other things the Crown Jewels as well as a grand collection of royal furniture, paintings and memorabilia. On the top floor is the Great Hall with a large collection of silver furniture as well as fine tapestries.
